Additional Means of Support

There are various means of support available to parents and families who have lost a child, but it is often challenging to find them unless you know they exist. Whether you are seeking a destination retreat where you can meet other parents who have experienced loss, a local support group, other non-profit organizations focused on pregnancy and infant loss, or ways to memorialize your child, we have provided a list below to help you find exactly what you may need.

 

Support Groups offered near Columbus, OH

*Please note that these support groups are offered free of charge to any parent who has experienced a loss regardless of where they delivered.

OhioHealth Hospitals
The pregnancy and infant loss support group for parents who have lost a baby before, during, or within the first year after birth. This group meets at 7:00pm on the first Tuesday of each month at the Kobacker House, located less than a mile north of Riverside Hospital on Olentangy River Road.

Mt. Carmel Hospitals
Mt. Carmel offers a pregnancy and infant loss support group which meets at 7:00pm on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Women’s Health Center, 477 Cooper Road, Westerville, OH 43081, located behind St. Ann’s Hospital. This group is spiritually led but is non-denominational even though Mt. Carmel Hospitals are rooted in Catholicism.

Mt. Carmel also offers a support group for parents who become pregnant after the loss of their child. This group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm at the Mt. Carmel Hospice Evergreen Center, 1144 Dublin Road, Columbus, OH 43215.

SIDS Newtwork of Ohio
Although this is a nationwide organization, there are several locations in Ohio which offer support groups. Call their toll free hotline at (800) 477-7437 for support and/or help finding a local support group.

Faith’s Lodge
The mission of Faith’s Lodge is to provide a place where parents and families facing the serious illness or loss of a child can retreat to reflect on the past, renew strength for the present and build hope for the future. Faith’s Lodge is located less than two hours from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota in Northwestern Wisconsin.

First Candle
“Because every baby deserves a first birthday.” First Candle is dedicated to safe pregnancies and the survival of all babies through the first years of life. Their priority is to eliminate Stillbirth, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) with programs of research, education and advocacy.

The M.I.S.S. Foundation is an international non-profit organization which provides immediate and ongoing support to grieving families, empowerment through community volunteerism opportunities, public policy and legislative education, and programs to reduce infant and toddler death through research and education.

M.E.N.D. is a Christian non-profit organization that reaches out to families who have suffered the loss of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death.

Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month Memorials/Remembrance Ceremonies

October is nationally recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. There are often remembrance walks, candle lightings, services, and even bulb plantings that occur throughout the month all over the world. These offer parents and families wonderful opportunities to remember their child in a special way. In order to find one near you, start by contacting the support groups listed above. Most offer these services or at least know how to find one.
